One week to go…

img_0370My childhood friend Chris and I leave for Alaska one week from today.  There’s a lot of stuff to be done between now and then, so I’m pretty stressed out.  Yesterday I took the DeLorean three hours north to Traverse City, MI to interview Bill Collins.  He was one of the first employees of the DeLorean company and was responsible for figuring out how to take John DeLorean’s vision and make it into a physical car.  There were two particularly notable moments in the interview.  First, apparently John told him he wanted the car to be, “…low enough that you could piss over it.”  I think Bill came darn close to succeeding at that.  I also asked him if he was surprised when he heard about John’s arrest in the cocaine sting operation.  Short answer?  “No.”  Hmm…

Mechanically the DeLorean did pretty well yesterday.  There’s still a little whistling noise when I turn slight right, and that worries me.  It seems to happen in a narrow range of steering.  I’m hoping it’s a little brake rubbing, but it’s been hard to isolate it and it doesn’t happen all the time.  [sigh]  Here’s to hoping whatever that noise represents doesn’t leave us stranded.  We have, at most, a two day buffer for the trip.  After than, Chris will have to leave me behind so he can catch his flight back home or we’ll have to work something else out.
